Whose novel is The Hunchback of Notre-Dame?

Victor Hugo's novel is set in Paris in 1482 and centres on Quasimodo, the deaf bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral, the dancer Esmeralda and the archdeacon Claude Frollo. Its original French title, Notre-Dame de Paris, reflects the fact that the cathedral itself is at the heart of the book. At the time, the Gothic cathedral was badly neglected, and Hugo wanted to raise awareness of the value of medieval architecture. The novel's success helped inspire a major restoration of Notre-Dame led by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, beginning in the 1840s. The story has been adapted many times, including Disney's animated film of 1996.
