Rowling said the idea for Harry Potter came to her in 1990 on a delayed train from Manchester to London. She wrote much of the first book as a single mother in Edinburgh, and it was rejected by 12 publishers before Bloomsbury accepted it. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published on 26 June 1997 with a first print run of just 500 hardback copies. The series ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007, which sold 11 million copies in its first 24 hours. The books have sold more than 600 million copies in over 80 languages, making it the best-selling book series in history.
