Stan Lee wanted a teenage hero with everyday problems, which was unusual when teens usually appeared only as sidekicks. Marvel publisher Martin Goodman worried readers would hate spiders, so Spider-Man was placed in the final issue of the cancelled series Amazing Fantasy. Steve Ditko designed the iconic red and blue costume with a full face mask and web pattern. Sales were strong, and The Amazing Spider-Man got its own series in 1963.
