George Lucas began writing Star Wars in 1973, drawing on old adventure serials like Flash Gordon, samurai films and the hero’s journey myths studied by Joseph Campbell. Studios doubted the idea, and 20th Century Fox gave it a modest budget of about 11 million dollars. Lucas took a smaller directing fee in exchange for merchandising and sequel rights, a deal that made him a billionaire. The film became the highest-grossing movie of its time and won six Oscars, and Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic to create its special effects. He sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for about 4 billion dollars.
