The Full Story
Kane came up with the first idea of a bat-themed hero, but Finger shaped much of what made the character iconic. Finger suggested the cowl, the grey suit and the dark cape, and gave him the name Bruce Wayne and his home of Gotham City. For decades only Kane received official credit, but DC Comics agreed to credit Finger as co-creator in 2015. The creators drew inspiration from Zorro, pulp detectives and even Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches of flying machines. The Joker first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940.
