John Lennon formed the Quarrymen in Liverpool in 1957 and met Paul McCartney at a church fete on 6 July that year. George Harrison joined in 1958, and after several name changes the band settled on The Beatles in August 1960, just before their first stint playing clubs in Hamburg. Ringo Starr replaced drummer Pete Best in August 1962, completing the classic line-up. Their first single, Love Me Do, came out in October 1962, and their February 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show drew about 73 million viewers. The band split in 1970, having released 13 studio albums in under eight years.
