When was the Sony Walkman released?

The Walkman idea came about partly because Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka wanted a way to listen to music on long flights. The TPS-L2 was a small, battery-powered cassette player with lightweight headphones and no recording function. It sold for 33,000 yen and quickly became a global phenomenon, transforming how people listened to music in public. Sony sold roughly 200 million cassette Walkmans over the years. It was sold under names such as Soundabout and Stowaway in some countries before 'Walkman' became universal.
