Whose novel is Pride and Prejudice?

Jane Austen drafted the novel in 1796 and 1797 under the title First Impressions, when she was just 21. A publisher turned it down unseen, and she revised it heavily before Thomas Egerton bought the rights for 110 pounds, published on 28 January 1813. The story follows the witty Elizabeth Bennet and the proud Mr Darcy, and its opening line about a single man in possession of a good fortune is one of the most famous in literature. Women writers of the time often published anonymously, and Austen’s name did not appear on any of her books during her life. The novel has sold an estimated 20 million copies and inspired countless adaptations, including the 1995 BBC series and the 2005 film.
