Whose novel is The Count of Monte Cristo?

Dumas wrote The Count of Monte Cristo with his collaborator Auguste Maquet, and it appeared in instalments in the Paris newspaper Journal des Débats between 1844 and 1846. The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young sailor falsely accused of treason and imprisoned in the island fortress of the Château d'If off Marseille. After 14 years he escapes, finds a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo and returns in disguise to take revenge on those who betrayed him. The novel is one of the most famous revenge stories ever written. Dumas is said to have drawn inspiration from a real case of wrongful imprisonment recorded in the police archives of Paris.
