Defoe's book tells the story of a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island, building a life and eventually meeting a man he names Friday. It was presented as a true autobiography, and the author's name did not appear on the first edition. Defoe was partly inspired by the real Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on an island in the Juan Fernández archipelago off Chile from 1704 to 1709. The book was hugely popular, and stories of shipwrecked survivors became known as 'Robinsonades'. In 1966 Chile renamed the island where Selkirk lived Robinson Crusoe Island.
