Whose novel is Les Misérables?

Victor Hugo completed Les Misérables while living in exile on the island of Guernsey, and it was published in 1862. The story follows Jean Valjean, a former convict who spends his life seeking redemption while being pursued by the police inspector Javert. Its dramatic climax takes place during the June Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, not during the French Revolution of 1789 as many people assume. It is one of the longest novels of the 19th century. The musical adaptation opened in Paris in 1980 and in London in 1985, where it became the West End's longest-running musical.
