The Smurfs first appeared on 23 October 1958 in the Belgian comic magazine Spirou, as supporting characters in Peyo's series Johan and Peewit. They proved so popular that they soon got their own stories. Their French name, Schtroumpfs, reportedly came about when Peyo forgot the word for salt at dinner and asked for the 'schtroumpf' instead. The small blue creatures are described as being 'three apples high'. Hanna-Barbera's animated series, launched in 1981, made them famous worldwide.
