Where is Hong Kong?

Hong Kong borders the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong province and faces the South China Sea. It is made up of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, the New Territories and more than 260 outlying islands, with a total land area of about 1,100 square kilometres. Britain governed it from the 1840s until 1 July 1997, when it was handed back to China as a Special Administrative Region under the principle of “one country, two systems”. Around 7.5 million people live there, making it one of the most densely populated places on Earth. Surprisingly, around 40 per cent of its land is protected country parks.
