Where is the Terracotta Army?

The Terracotta Army lies in pits about 1.5 km east of the burial mound of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, who died in 210 BC. The site is in Lintong District, around 40 km east of the city of Xi’an. Farmers digging a well discovered the first fragments in 1974. Archaeologists estimate the pits contain around 8,000 soldiers, along with hundreds of horses and chariots, and no two faces appear exactly the same. The emperor’s own tomb mound has never been opened, partly out of respect and partly because of concerns about preservation and ancient reports of rivers of mercury inside.
