Where was the ancient city of Troy?

Most archaeologists identify ancient Troy with the mound of Hisarlik in Çanakkale Province, north-west Turkey, a few kilometres from the entrance to the Dardanelles. Its position controlled a key sea route between the Aegean and the Black Sea. German businessman Heinrich Schliemann began large-scale digging there in 1870, following the lead of British archaeologist Frank Calvert. Excavations revealed at least nine cities built on top of one another over some 4,000 years. The layers known as Troy VI and VIIa, dating to around 1200 BC, are the leading candidates for the city of Homer’s Iliad.
