Where is Göbekli Tepe?

Göbekli Tepe sits about 15 km north-east of Şanlıurfa in the region of Upper Mesopotamia. Its earliest monumental structures were built around 9500 BCE, more than 11,000 years ago, by people who were still hunter-gatherers. The site contains circular enclosures of massive T-shaped limestone pillars, some over 5 metres tall, carved with foxes, boars, snakes, vultures and scorpions. German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt led excavations from 1995 and argued it was a ritual gathering place. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 and has changed ideas about how early societies organised large projects.
