The Great Wall of Gorgan (also called the Red Snake) in northeastern Iran stretches about 195 km along the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea. Built during the Sasanian Empire (3rd–7th century AD), it includes over 30 forts spaced at regular intervals. The wall was designed to defend against northern nomadic incursions. While far shorter than the Great Wall of China, it is the longest ancient defensive wall outside China and remained largely unknown to Western scholars until recent decades.
