Where is Skara Brae?

Skara Brae was lived in from roughly 3180 to 2500 BCE, making it older than Stonehenge's great stone circle and the Great Pyramid of Giza. It lay hidden under sand dunes until a violent storm in 1850 stripped away the grass and sand and exposed the stone houses. The village has eight well-preserved dwellings connected by covered passageways. Because wood was scarce on Orkney, the inhabitants built their furniture from stone, including beds, shelved dressers and storage boxes that can still be seen today. It forms part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1999.
