The area was called Longacre Square until 1904, when it was renamed after The New York Times moved into its new tower there. Giant digital billboards light the square day and night, and it sits at the heart of the Broadway theatre district. Parts of Broadway were closed to cars in 2009 and turned into pedestrian plazas.
