Singapore sits about 137 km north of the equator, separated from Malaysia by the narrow Johor Strait and from Indonesia’s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait. It consists of one main island and more than 60 smaller islets. Land reclamation has enlarged the country by roughly a quarter since independence, to about 735 square kilometres. Singapore became an independent nation on 9 August 1965 after leaving Malaysia. Its position on the main shipping route between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea has made it one of the busiest ports in the world.
