Las Vegas lies in Clark County in the south of Nevada, about 435 km by road north-east of Los Angeles. Its name is Spanish for “the meadows”, after the green areas fed by desert springs that attracted travellers in the 1800s. The city was founded in 1905 as a railway town, and it boomed after Nevada legalised gambling in 1931 and the nearby Hoover Dam was built. Most of the famous Las Vegas Strip is actually outside the city limits, in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. Before the pandemic the area welcomed more than 40 million visitors a year.
