Where are the Everglades?

The Everglades stretch across the southern tip of Florida, fed by a slow-moving sheet of water that historically flowed from Lake Okeechobee south to Florida Bay. Writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas famously called it a “River of Grass” in her 1947 book, the same year Everglades National Park was established. The park protects about 6,100 square kilometres, making it the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It is the only place in the world where American alligators and American crocodiles live side by side in the wild. Drainage and development shrank the original wetland by around half, and a huge restoration project is under way.
