General Sherman is a giant sequoia standing in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It is about 83 metres tall and its trunk measures about 31 metres around at the base. Its trunk volume is roughly 1,487 cubic metres, making it the largest known single-stem tree on Earth by volume, although not the tallest or widest. Scientists estimate it is around 2,200 years old. The tree was named in 1879 after the American Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman.
