Where is Denali?

Denali stands within Denali National Park and Preserve, roughly halfway between Anchorage and Fairbanks. A 2015 survey measured its summit at 20,310 feet, about 6,190 metres, making it the highest mountain in North America. Its rise from the surrounding lowlands is about 5,500 metres, one of the largest base-to-summit rises of any mountain on land. The first ascent of the main summit was made in 1913 by Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper and Robert Tatum, with Harper, an Alaska Native, the first to stand on top. Its name has been politically contested: the US government called it Mount McKinley, renamed it Denali in 2015 and restored 'Mount McKinley' in 2025, while the State of Alaska uses Denali.
