Antelope Canyon is made up of two main sections, Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon, just east of Page and close to Lake Powell. It was carved into Navajo Sandstone over thousands of years by flash floods and wind, creating narrow passages with smooth, wave-like walls. Sunbeams shining down through the narrow openings make it one of the most photographed places in the American Southwest. Because it lies within the Navajo Nation, visitors can enter only on tours led by authorised Navajo guides. Flash floods remain a real danger: in 1997 a sudden flood swept through Lower Antelope Canyon and killed 11 tourists.
