Where is the windiest place on Earth?

Commonwealth Bay, on the coast of East Antarctica, holds a reputation as the windiest place at sea level on Earth. It is battered by katabatic winds — dense, cold air that pours downhill from the high polar plateau under gravity, accelerating as it descends. Average wind speeds there hover around 80 kilometers per hour, and gusts have topped 240 km/h. The explorer Douglas Mawson, whose expedition wintered there in 1912, called it the Home of the Blizzard. The strongest surface gust ever directly measured, 408 km/h, was recorded during a tropical cyclone off Australia.
