Angel Falls, or Salto Angel, in the Canaima National Park of Venezuela is the highest uninterrupted waterfall on Earth, plunging 979 metres from the top of the Auyan-tepui, a flat-topped mountain. The single clear drop measures about 807 metres, so tall that during the dry season much of the water evaporates into mist before it reaches the ground. The falls were named after American aviator Jimmie Angel, who flew over them in 1933 and later crash-landed his plane on top of the tepui in 1937. The local Pemon people had long known the falls as Kerepakupai Meru.
