Wild giant pandas live in mountain forests at elevations of about 1,200 to 3,400 metres, where dense bamboo grows. Bamboo makes up about 99 percent of their diet, and an adult may eat 12 to 38 kilograms of it a day. The most recent national survey counted about 1,864 wild pandas. China has created dozens of panda reserves, and in 2021 established Giant Panda National Park, covering about 27,000 square kilometres. In 2016 the IUCN downgraded the species from endangered to vulnerable thanks to conservation success.
