Whose story is Pinocchio?

Carlo Collodi was the pen name of Carlo Lorenzini, a Florentine journalist. The Adventures of Pinocchio first appeared in instalments in a children's magazine, Giornale per i bambini, in 1881 before being published as a book in 1883. It tells of a wooden puppet carved by the woodcarver Geppetto who longs to become a real boy and whose nose grows when he lies. The original story is darker and more moralistic than many modern versions. It has been translated into hundreds of languages and was adapted into Disney's famous animated film in 1940.
