Bohemian Rhapsody was written by Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British rock band Queen, and released in October 1975. Lasting almost six minutes, it has no repeating chorus and moves through a ballad, an operatic section and a hard rock passage before a quiet ending. Many people at the record company thought it was too long for radio, but it spent nine weeks at number one in the UK. Its groundbreaking promotional video helped establish the music video as a marketing tool. The song returned to the charts after the 1992 film Wayne’s World and again after the 2018 biopic named after it.
