Whose music is the William Tell Overture?

Rossini's opera Guillaume Tell premiered at the Paris Opéra on 3 August 1829. It was based on Friedrich Schiller's 1804 play about the legendary Swiss hero who shoots an apple off his son's head with a crossbow. The overture has four parts, depicting dawn, a storm, a pastoral calm and the famous galloping finale. The opera turned out to be Rossini's last: he retired from writing operas at the age of 37, although he lived until 1868. The galloping finale became widely known as the theme music of The Lone Ranger on radio and television.
