The Full Story
Fred Morrison and his future wife Lucile enjoyed tossing cake pans on the beach in California in the 1930s. After World War II, Morrison designed plastic flying discs, first the Flyin-Saucer with partner Warren Franscioni and then his own Pluto Platter. He sold the rights to the toy company Wham-O in 1957. Wham-O renamed it the Frisbee in 1958, after the Frisbie Pie Company of Connecticut, whose empty pie tins college students had tossed. Wham-O's designer Ed Headrick later improved the disc and helped create the sport of disc golf.
