Whose invention was the Rubik’s Cube?

Ernő Rubik, who taught at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest, built his first prototype in 1974 from wooden blocks held together by rubber bands and later an ingenious internal mechanism. After scrambling it, he reportedly took about a month to solve it himself. It went on sale in Hungary in 1977 as the “Magic Cube” and was renamed the Rubik’s Cube for its international launch in 1980. The standard 3×3×3 cube has about 43 quintillion possible positions, yet any position can be solved in 20 moves or fewer. It is often called the best-selling puzzle toy of all time, with hundreds of millions sold.
