Whose invention was the car?

Many inventors contributed to the automobile, but Karl Benz of Germany is generally credited with creating the first practical car powered by an internal combustion engine. He was granted a patent for his three-wheeled Benz Patent-Motorwagen on 29 January 1886, which is often treated as the car’s birth certificate. Around the same time, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were developing their own engines and vehicles nearby. In August 1888 Benz’s wife, Bertha, drove the Motorwagen about 106 kilometres from Mannheim to Pforzheim with her two sons, proving the car could travel long distances and generating valuable publicity. The companies of Benz and Daimler later merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz, the maker of Mercedes-Benz cars.
