Whose invention was the dishwasher?

Josephine Cochrane was a wealthy socialite who reportedly grew frustrated when servants chipped her fine china. She designed a machine with wire compartments sized to hold plates, cups and saucers, placed inside a wheel that turned while hot soapy water sprayed from below. She received a patent in December 1886 and showed her invention at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where it won an award. Hotels and restaurants became her first customers, since early machines were large and needed plenty of hot water. Her company eventually became part of KitchenAid, now owned by Whirlpool.
