Whose invention was the computer mouse?

Douglas Engelbart, a researcher at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in California, conceived the mouse as part of his vision of computers that augment human intellect. Bill English built the first prototype around 1964: a wooden block with two perpendicular metal wheels and a single button. Engelbart unveiled it to the world in December 1968 in a famous presentation later nicknamed “The Mother of All Demos”, which also showed hypertext, windows and video conferencing. The patent, granted in 1970, called it an “X-Y position indicator for a display system”. Xerox PARC, Apple and Microsoft later helped turn the mouse into a standard tool.
