Whose idea were the modern Olympic Games?

Pierre de Coubertin believed sport could build character and promote peace between nations, inspired partly by physical education in English schools and by the ancient Games at Olympia. At a congress at the Sorbonne in Paris in June 1894, he founded the International Olympic Committee. The first modern Olympics took place in Athens in April 1896, with about 241 athletes from 14 nations competing in 43 events. Coubertin served as IOC president from 1896 to 1925 and designed the five-ring Olympic symbol in 1913. The ancient Olympic Games had been held from 776 BCE until they were ended around 393 CE.
