When was the first bungee jump?

The club was inspired by the land diving ritual of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, where men leap from tall wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles. On 1 April 1979, four members jumped from the Clifton Suspension Bridge using elastic ropes, dressed in top hats and tails; they were arrested shortly afterwards. The stunt was repeated from bridges in the United States, drawing global attention. In 1988, New Zealander A. J. Hackett opened the world's first permanent commercial bungee site at the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge near Queenstown. Bungee jumping soon spread worldwide as an adventure sport.
