The early games featured events such as running, wrestling, boxing and chariot racing, and competitors took part naked. The modern Olympic Games were revived by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and first held in Athens in 1896, with 14 nations and around 240 athletes. Today the Olympics are among the largest sporting events in the world.
