The Full Story
William G. Morgan wanted a less strenuous indoor game than basketball for businessmen at the YMCA in Holyoke. In 1895 he created a game called Mintonette, borrowing elements from basketball, baseball, tennis and handball. During a demonstration in 1896, observer Alfred Halstead suggested the name 'volley ball' because players volleyed the ball over the net. The sport spread quickly through YMCA networks around the world. Indoor volleyball joined the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, and beach volleyball followed in 1996.
