It was named after English whaler William Scoresby, who explored it in 1822. The fjord is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, massive icebergs calved from nearby glaciers, and tundra inhabited by musk oxen, Arctic foxes, and polar bears. Only a few hundred people live in the settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit at its mouth.
