Where is the source of the Ganges River?

The river regarded as the main source of the Ganges is the Bhagirathi, which rises from the snout of the Gangotri Glacier at an ice cave known as Gaumukh, at an altitude of about 4,000 metres. The glacier sits in the Indian Himalayas in Uttarakhand. The Bhagirathi later joins the Alaknanda river at Devprayag, and from that point the combined flow is called the Ganges. The river then travels around 2,500 kilometres across the plains of northern India and Bangladesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges is considered sacred by hundreds of millions of people.
