Kiritimati (Christmas Island), part of the Republic of Kiribati in the central Pacific, is the world's largest coral atoll by land area, covering about 388 square kilometres — though much of it is lagoon. It was named by Captain James Cook, who arrived on Christmas Eve 1777. The atoll is an important bird sanctuary, hosting millions of seabirds. It was also used for British and American nuclear testing in the 1950s and 1960s. Kiritimati is one of the first places on Earth to see each new year.
