George Washington chose the site, and construction began in 1792 to a design by Irish-born architect James Hoban. John and Abigail Adams moved in in November 1800 before it was even finished. British troops set it on fire in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and it had to be rebuilt. The building has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and six levels, and around 570 gallons of paint are needed to cover its outside. The name White House was made official by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1901.
