Where is Stonehenge?

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument built in several stages, beginning with a circular ditch and bank around 3000 BC. The giant sarsen stones, some weighing around 25 tonnes, were raised around 2500 BC and came from West Woods about 25 km to the north. The smaller bluestones were transported roughly 225 km from the Preseli Hills in Wales, a remarkable feat for Neolithic builders. The monument is aligned with the sunrise on the summer solstice and the sunset on the winter solstice, suggesting it marked the calendar. Together with nearby Avebury, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
