The Full Story
The Yongle Emperor of the Ming dynasty ordered its construction, which took place from 1406 to 1420. It was home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties until the last emperor, Puyi, abdicated in 1912. The complex covers about 72 hectares and contains around 980 surviving buildings, surrounded by a 10-metre-high wall and a wide moat. It was called forbidden because ordinary people could not enter without the emperor permission. Since 1925 it has housed the Palace Museum, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
