Where is Chichen Itza?

Chichen Itza flourished from around AD 600 to 1200 and became one of the largest and most powerful Maya cities. Its most famous structure is El Castillo, the Temple of Kukulkan, a step pyramid with 91 steps on each of its four sides plus a top platform, totalling 365, the number of days in a year. At the spring and autumn equinoxes, shadows form a pattern that looks like a serpent slithering down the northern staircase. The site also has a huge ball court and a sacred sinkhole, or cenote, where offerings were thrown. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
