The Full Story
The Art Deco statue was completed in 1931 after nine years of construction. It was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa with French sculptor Paul Landowski, and it is made of reinforced concrete covered with a mosaic of thousands of soapstone tiles. The figure is 30 metres tall, standing on an 8-metre pedestal, and its outstretched arms span 28 metres. From its perch in Tijuca National Park, it overlooks Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana and Guanabara Bay. In 2007 it was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
