Where is the Sagrada Família?

Work on the Basílica de la Sagrada Família began in 1882, and Antoni Gaudí took over the project a year later, devoting the rest of his life to it. When he died in 1926, after being hit by a tram, less than a quarter of the building was complete. Construction has continued for more than 140 years, funded mainly by visitor tickets and donations. In 2025 the rising central Tower of Jesus Christ pushed the basilica past Germany’s Ulm Minster to become the tallest church in the world, and it is designed to reach 172.5 metres when finished. The church was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and receives around 4.7 million visitors a year.
