The Full Story
The Louvre began as a fortress built by King Philip II in the late 12th century and later became a royal palace. It opened as a public museum in 1793, during the French Revolution. Its collection includes around 35,000 works on display, among them the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The glass pyramid entrance, designed by architect I. M. Pei, opened in 1989. In recent years the Louvre has welcomed around 8 to 9 million visitors annually.
